ACUPUNCTURE FOR ARTHRITIS
Living with arthritis can affect much more than your joints. Pain and stiffness can make everyday activities such as walking, getting dressed, gardening, exercising or sleeping comfortably more difficult.
Symptoms can vary considerably from person to person. Some people experience occasional flare-ups, while others live with pain and stiffness on a daily basis.
At LB Acupuncture, I'll take the time to understand your symptoms, medical history and how arthritis is affecting your everyday life before deciding on the most appropriate approach to your treatment.
What is arthritis?
Arthritis is a term used to describe conditions that cause pain, inflammation or stiffness in the joints.
There are many different types of arthritis. Two of the most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis is associated with changes within the joint over time and commonly affects areas such as the knees, hips, hands and spine.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the joints and can cause pain, swelling and stiffness.
Common symptoms of arthritis
Symptoms vary depending on the type of arthritis and the joints affected, but may include:
Some forms of arthritis can also cause symptoms elsewhere in the body, which is why appropriate medical diagnosis and ongoing care are important.
How does Traditional Chinese Medicine view arthritis?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), joint pain and stiffness may be viewed as a disruption in the smooth flow of qi and blood.
TCM may also consider patterns traditionally associated with factors such as Cold, Damp or Wind, alongside your overall health and other symptoms.
During your consultation, I'll consider your arthritis symptoms alongside your general health, lifestyle and medical history as part of your Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment.
Can acupuncture help with arthritis?
Some people choose acupuncture alongside their existing medical care to help manage arthritis symptoms.
Research suggests acupuncture may help reduce pain and improve function for some people with osteoarthritis, particularly knee osteoarthritis, although results vary between individuals and the evidence isn't the same for every type of arthritis.
Acupuncture doesn't cure arthritis and shouldn't replace treatment or medication recommended by your doctor or specialist.
What happens during your first appointment?
Your first appointment will usually last up to 90 minutes, giving us plenty of time to discuss:
I'll also carry out a Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment, which includes checking your pulse and looking at your tongue.
Following your consultation, if appropriate, you'll receive your first acupuncture treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
There's no set number of treatments because arthritis affects everyone differently.
We'll take into account the type of arthritis you have, how long you've experienced symptoms, your general health and how you respond to treatment.
We'll review your progress together and discuss what's appropriate as treatment progresses.
Lisa's Advice
Gentle, regular movement can be important when living with arthritis. Staying active may help maintain strength and mobility, although it's also important to listen to your body and avoid pushing through significant pain.
Finding the right balance between activity and rest can be particularly important during painful flare-ups.
If you develop a hot, swollen joint, sudden severe pain or joint pain accompanied by fever or feeling generally unwell, seek prompt medical advice.
