Acupuncture for Hip Pain | Melbourne, Derby | LB Acupuncture

Acupuncture for Hip Pain

Hip pain can make even the simplest daily activities uncomfortable. Walking, climbing stairs, getting in and out of the car, or sleeping on your side can all become more difficult when your hip is painful. Understanding hip pain symptoms is crucial for effective treatment.

Hip pain can affect people of all ages. It may develop gradually over time, follow an injury, or be linked to everyday wear and tear. Sometimes the pain is felt directly in the hip, while in other cases, it may spread into the groin, buttock, or thigh.

At LB Acupuncture, I take the time to understand not only where your pain is but also how it affects your daily life. Every treatment is tailored to your individual needs, helping us develop an effective hip pain treatment approach that's right for you.

What is hip pain?

The hip is a strong ball-and-socket joint that supports much of your body's weight during standing, walking, and movement. Because it works so hard, many different structures can become irritated or injured. Hip pain can develop for many reasons, including osteoarthritis, tendon problems, bursitis, muscle strain, or injuries affecting the joint itself.

Some people notice pain only when they're active, while others experience stiffness first thing in the morning, discomfort after sitting for long periods, or pain that disturbs their sleep. Sometimes the pain develops gradually over weeks or months, while in other cases, it follows a fall, a sporting injury, or an increase in physical activity.

Common symptoms of hip pain

Symptoms may include:

- Pain in the hip, groin, or buttock

- Pain that spreads into the thigh

- Stiffness, particularly after resting

- Difficulty walking or climbing stairs

- Pain when getting in and out of a car

- Discomfort when lying on the affected side

- Reduced movement or flexibility

Although many people think of hip pain as being felt on the outside of the hip, pain in the groin is actually a common sign that the hip joint itself may be involved. As every person is different, your symptoms and the cause of your hip pain may not be the same as someone else's.

How does Traditional Chinese Medicine view hip pain?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), hip pain isn't simply viewed as a problem within the joint itself. Pain may develop when the smooth flow of Qi and Blood becomes disrupted through injury, repetitive strain, or overuse. For some people, longer-term deficiencies or external factors such as Wind, Cold, or Damp may also contribute to ongoing discomfort.

During your consultation, I'll consider your overall health, lifestyle, and symptoms before tailoring treatment to your individual pattern.

Can acupuncture help with hip pain?

Many people choose acupuncture as part of their approach to managing hip pain. Research suggests that acupuncture benefits include pain reduction and improvement in function for some people with hip pain, including those with arthritis; however, results vary between individuals.

For some patients, I may also recommend electroacupuncture in their treatment. This technique combines acupuncture with gentle electrical stimulation and may be suitable for certain types of persistent musculoskeletal pain. Acupuncture may be used alongside exercises, physiotherapy, or other treatments recommended by your healthcare professional.

What happens during your first appointment?

Your first appointment lasts around an hour and fifteen minutes. We will discuss:

- When did your hip pain start

- What movements or activities make it better or worse

- Previous injuries or treatment

- Your work, hobbies, and activity levels

- Your general health and lifestyle

Following your consultation, you'll receive your first acupuncture treatment using sterile, single-use needles.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on the cause of your hip pain, how long you've had your symptoms, and how you respond to treatment. Some people notice improvements after a few sessions, while longer-standing conditions may require a more extended course of treatment. We'll review your progress together and adjust your treatment plan where appropriate.

Lisa's Advice

Many people with hip pain start changing the way they walk without even realizing it. Over time, this can place extra strain on the knee, lower back, or the opposite hip. Seeking early advice may help prevent other areas from becoming uncomfortable as your body compensates.

If your hip pain follows a significant fall, you cannot bear weight on your leg, or you develop severe pain with swelling, fever, or sudden deformity, it's important to seek urgent medical assessment.
