Acupuncture for Shoulder Pain

ACUPUNCTURE FOR SHOULDER PAIN

Shoulder pain can make everyday tasks surprisingly difficult. Reaching up to a cupboard, fastening a seatbelt, getting dressed, or even lying comfortably in bed can become painful when your shoulder isn't moving as it should.

Whether your shoulder pain has come on suddenly after an injury or has gradually developed over time, it can have a real impact on your daily life.

At LB Acupuncture, I take the time to understand not only where your pain is, but how it's affecting you. Each individual experiences shoulder pain differently, so your acupuncture treatment is tailored to your specific needs rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.

What causes shoulder pain?

The shoulder is one of the body's most mobile joints, making it vulnerable to injury and strain. Shoulder pain can develop for many reasons. Common causes include:

- Muscle strain

- Tendon irritation or injury

- Rotator cuff problems

- Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)

- Poor posture

- Repetitive movements at work or during sports

- Arthritis

- Shoulder impingement

- Referred pain from the neck

During your consultation, we'll discuss your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle to help identify the factors that may be contributing to your shoulder pain.

How does Traditional Chinese Medicine view shoulder pain?

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, shoulder pain isn't simply viewed as a problem with the shoulder itself. Pain may develop for various underlying reasons depending on the individual. For some, it may be related to stagnation of Qi and Blood following an injury. For others, long-term patterns of deficiency or the influence of external factors such as Wind, Cold, or Damp may contribute.

Rather than treating everyone in the same way, I'll conduct a detailed consultation to understand your overall health pattern before customizing your acupuncture treatment to address your shoulder pain relief effectively.

Can acupuncture help with shoulder pain?

Many people choose acupuncture as part of their approach to managing shoulder pain. Research suggests that acupuncture may help reduce pain and improve shoulder function for some individuals, although results can vary.

Treatment is always tailored to your symptoms, medical history, and individual needs.

What happens during your first appointment?

Your first appointment lasts around an hour and includes a detailed consultation. We'll discuss:

- When your shoulder pain began

- Where you feel the pain

- Whether your movement is restricted

- Activities that exacerbate or alleviate your symptoms

- Previous injuries or treatments

- Your general health and lifestyle

Following your consultation, you'll receive your first acupuncture treatment using very fine, sterile, single-use needles for your shoulder pain.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on the cause of your shoulder pain, the duration of your symptoms, and your response to treatment. Some individuals notice improvements after a few sessions, while longer-standing conditions, such as frozen shoulder, may require a more extended course of acupuncture treatment.

We'll review your progress together and discuss the most appropriate treatment plan for your shoulder pain relief.

Lisa's Advice

Many people avoid moving a painful shoulder altogether, but gentle movement can be an essential part of recovery. Unless advised otherwise by a healthcare professional, keeping the shoulder moving within a comfortable range can help prevent it from becoming stiffer.

If your shoulder pain started after a significant injury or if you suddenly cannot lift your arm, experience severe swelling or deformity, or develop pain with chest discomfort or shortness of breath, seek urgent medical advice.

Why choose LB Acupuncture?

I understand how frustrating shoulder pain can be, especially when it disrupts your sleep, work, or hobbies. At LB Acupuncture, you'll have the time to discuss your symptoms without feeling rushed. I strive to provide a calm and supportive environment where we can work together to understand what's contributing to your pain and develop a treatment plan that suits you.

My clinic is based in Melbourne, Derbyshire, and I welcome patients from Derby, Castle Donington, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Swadlincote, Burton upon Trent, and the surrounding areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, and most people experience very little discomfort. Many patients find treatment relaxing and are often surprised by how gentle it feels.

Can acupuncture help frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is a condition that usually improves over time, although recovery can take many months. Some people incorporate acupuncture into their overall approach to managing pain and improving movement. We'll discuss your symptoms and determine whether acupuncture may be suitable for you.

Can I have acupuncture alongside physiotherapy or other treatments?

Yes. Many individuals choose to have acupuncture alongside physiotherapy, exercises, or treatments recommended by their GP or specialist. We'll discuss your current care during your consultation.
